Welcome Support

Ken MacArthur's  21 January letter, Reactivate Rifles, is timely.  Hopefully a new government will revisit the 1964 political decision that relegated the Halifax Rifles to the Supplementary Reserve, leaving our province without a reconnaissance capability so important in view of potential security threats to our coastline. All other mainland provinces and PEI still have this capability.

Reactivating the Rifles as a reconnaissance squadron will add appreciably to the effectiveness of  Army support for RCMP security operations on our sparsely inhabited coastline. National Security elevates this above partisan politics and it warrants support from all Nova Scotia MPs, MLAs, and the public. Premier Hamm and Mr. Dexter, leader of the opposition, wrote the Defence Minister supporting this initiative and the Royal United Services Institute of NS  supports it as well.

Ken MacArthur is a fine example of the caliber of the 187 Halifax Rifles soldiers who fought with us, in the 22nd Armoured Regiment(Canadian Grenadier Guards) . Eleven of them were killed and many more wounded, including Ken who still carries the burden of his wound. We "Friends of the Regiment" welcome his letter with the possibility that it will stir Nova Scotians to support the initiative to have his regiment, the Halifax Rifles, reactivated.
