Think Security

Your Front Page " Hillier to rejig Forces' structure" 6 June

Let us hope in the process a restructured army will include a reconnaissance capability located in Nova Scotia like every other mainland province and Prince Edward Island has.

Forty years ago a political rejigging of the army removed this important capability from
Nova Scotia. Its lengthy and notoriously vulnerable coastline, and the security implications of intruders
coming ashore for no good purpose, indicate a need to restore it.  This will improve significantly the quality of army support available, within the province, for  RCMP coastline security operations should it be requested.

It is relevant that our coastline on the
Atlantic is also an important part of the continental perimeter. Canada's responsibility for its security should not be taken lightly in view of
international agreements with our neighbours to the south.
